Over the years, here in the Netherlands, I have seen many a good horse (mostly at a young age) of owners, being packed off to the slaughter house and ending up for human consumption. Of course, most horses that end up at the slaughter house have a physical ailment - generally, due to ignorance (for example, horses broken in and worked at a very young age - incorrect use of auxiliary reins/help reins, etc. etc.). This is also generally an 'insurance thing', especially in the horse sport world - dressage, jumping and racing.
The thing is, with correct treatment, training and patience most ailments can be cured.
